Iran’s government has unveiled plans to relocate the nation’s capital to the southern coastal Makran region, near the border with Pakistan. The move aims to address Tehran’s overpopulation, water scarcity, and power shortages while promoting regional economic development. Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani confirmed the decision, emphasizing Makran’s strategic and economic potential, "The new capital will definitely be in the south, in the Makran region, and this matter is currently being worked on." Two councils will be established to assess the feasibility of the move and develop a sea-based economy in the region. President Masoud Pezeshkian described Tehran’s financial imbalance and ecological challenges as unsustainable, advocating for a shift to relieve the capital’s pressures. However, critics have raised concerns about the financial and logistical burdens of such a large-scale relocation.
