@wojcikrp: Congratulations Poland
🇵🇱 on 25 years in NATO! It’s an achievement which during the
#ColdWar, and even the early/mid 1990’s, most believe is unattainable.
🇵🇱’s march to secure its freedom, has an earthquake-like impact, helping to free not only
🇵🇱, but 100million+ citizens throughout Central/Eastern Europe (CEE) from the grip of SovietRussia.
Poland - Providing, not Consuming security.
There is no question that the doubters have been proven wrong, who said that
🇵🇱, (if allowed to join NATO) would be a “drag” on the Alliance, and a “Security Consumer,” not a “Security Provider.”
🇵🇱 quashed that argument even before NATO accession, participating in NATO operations in the Balkans, and even earlier supporting
🇺🇸 in Haiti, and in 1991-coalition operations in Iraq (which include almost all of NATO). After joining NATO,
🇵🇱’s list of participation and accomplishments as “Security Provider” is as impressive as it is long.
🇵🇱Leadership.
Poland helps lead the CEE out of SovietRussian control with its Solidarity movement, inspiring the world. Then,
🇵🇱 conducts the CEE’s first
#ColdWar-era democratic (semi-free) elections. These elections occur months before the Fall of the Berlin Wall. In fact, the case is clear, but not well known, that
🇵🇱, plays a pivotal role in the fall of the SovietUnion.
🇵🇱Leadership.
Poland’s tireless lobbying for NATO accession also helps bring the Czech Republic and Hungary along at the same time. 13 more nations have followed!
🇵🇱 blazes a trail for other former SovietRussian/communist-controlled states, allowing them to anchor themselves in the West. Some wonder at the time, “why is this so” with
🇵🇱? Stalin helps answer the question in a word-picture, saying, ‘Imposing Communism on Poland was akin to fitting a saddle onto a cow.’
🇵🇱- Think about it.
On 11 March, 1999, there were 16 NATO members. Today, that’s doubled to 32! Poland is instrumental in kickstarting NATO to move beyond 16. Some wanted to “shut the door,” on allowing accession of
🇵🇱, and other newly-freed CEE nations.
🇵🇱 successfully makes the case to
🇺🇸, and the rest of the Alliance, about “why” NATO’s “Open Door” policy must be more than an obscure paragraph in NATO’s Treaty. Poland’s
🇺🇸diaspora and
#PolishAmericanCongress also play a crucial role in convincing
🇺🇸’s President/Congress to support
🇵🇱’s NATO accession.
🇵🇱’s Leadership continues.
Today, Poland strongly advocates for:
(1) Ukraine’s victory and rapid NATO accession, while supporting millions of
🇺🇦refugees.
(2) Arming and supporting
🇺🇦 with everything it needs for victory & restoration of its 1991 borders.
🇵🇱 again, sets the example, sending every piece of equipment it can - as fast as it can - including more tanks than the rest of NATO combined, + fighter aircraft, artillery, air defense/more (risking
🇵🇱’s own military readiness, even as a frontline-state to Russia’s illegal and brutal war on Ukraine).
(3) Strong
#ForwardDefense on NATO’s
#EasternFront. In 2020,
🇵🇱 signed a watershed defense agreement with
🇺🇸. In it,
🇵🇱 agrees to shoulder massive costs in infrastructure upgrades to support
🇺🇸 troops, and NATO reinforcements during crisis. It’s a prescient undertaking as it is paying off significantly today with ~10,000
🇺🇸 troops continuously present in Poland. This includes - though small for now - permanent assignment of four
🇺🇸 Army, Navy and Air Force units in
🇵🇱.
#PermanentPresence of
🇺🇸, (and Western-allied) units in
🇵🇱/CEE needs to grow significantly - in order to regain the initiative and deterrence against Russia. It’s no surprise,
🇵🇱 advocates strongly for this as well.
(4) NATO Allies to take their Treaty obligations under Article 3, “self defense,” seriously, with
🇵🇱 again, leading by example, undertaking the most ambitious and rapid military modernization program in all of Europe.
(5) NATO Allies to go beyond the 2% GDP defense spending commitment - originally conceived of during a peacetime era - to[...]
