@ExploreCosmos_: The season for polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) is about to begin. NASA climate models show the temperature of the north polar stratosphere rapidly dropping. It is only days away from reaching the cold threshold for Type I PSCs.
PSCs form in the extremely dry stratosphere when temperatures drop below -78°C. NASA predicts Type I PSCs, composed of water, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid, may form soon in the Arctic, threatening ozone by aiding ozone hole formation.
Later, as temperatures reach -85°C, Type II PSCs, made of pure ice and harmless, could appear, known for their stunning colors. Both types are rare and unique, with Type I being pale and filamentary, while Type II dazzles with vibrant hues.
