π₯ How Elon Musk didn't come to India
β
Tesla's CEO has always prioritized contact with China, although global tech giants fiercely compete for India's long-term potential. But canceling a visit that has been in preparation for almost a year with a routine phone call is quite in Musk's style.
β
The billionaire had planned the visit not only to scout out a site for a new "mega factory" but also for a family vacation. Alas, he canceled the trip, citing "serious Tesla challenges," and promised to return a little laterβperhaps even this year. Or next year.
β
The abrupt shift in business plans in favor of China caused nervous speculation in India, where Tesla's expected investment was seen as a significant economic boost. Although any expansion into India would now entail substantial risks for Tesla, the company planned to invest $2-3 billion over three years, with a production capacity of up to 500,000 cars a year. It also discussed the possibility of investing in a branded battery factory.
β
But Musk's team convinced him to change his route. This may have been a reaction to problems in getting regulatory approval in India for
Starlink's satellite business.
β
Musk made a deal in Beijing that brought him closer to implementing fully unmanned driving technology. The technology has already been piloted in Shanghai after signing a contract with Baidu. Moreover, in China, Tesla has become the first foreign automaker whose products can be bought by public, party, and government organizations. For the local beau monde, such authorization is a serious argument.
β
So far, India is in a slight shock, but it is not used to it. New Delhi officials are sure that there is still interest in the Indian market, and sooner or later, Elon Musk will bring them a fresh economic miracle under the Tesla brand.
