🇬🇧 Winter strike season: Britain faces a «Christmas of discontent»⠀
⚠️ More than 100,000 civil servants from the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) have voted to join nurses, rail workers, university staff and others in strikes that unions warn could «bring down» the country's economy over the next few months.
⠀
Union leaders accuse government of «forcing strike». ⠀
On Monday, there was a meeting of representatives of the trade unions, who either have already announced a strike or are preparing to vote on this issue. In addition to doctors, the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, Aslef, the union for train drivers, the GMB and three teacher unions are already ready for protests.
⠀
There is no specific date yet, but the PCS probably planned its most active protests for the Christmas period, trying to repeat the «winter of discontent» of 1978-1979 that helped bring Margaret Thatcher to power.
⠀
The backdrop for the global strike is «a depressing combination of long-term pay restrictions, the challenges of working in overburdened public services and the effects of a prolonged lockdown». New data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the UK economy contracted by 0.2% between July and September − a clear sign of the start of a recession.
⠀
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has already said the country has a «hard road ahead»: tomorrow he is due to present the «Autumn Forecast Statement » and announce tax hikes and spending cuts. The new government needs to show citizens that Britain can get its public finances in order and restore confidence in the economy after the chaos in the financial market provoked by former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
⠀
Let's see what happens.
