The F-15EX Eagle II's first exercise debut was Northern Edge 21. The exercise tested the aircraft's expanded capabilities. The F-15EX has a series of upgrades compared to the older F-15C Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle models, including a digital cockpit, a more advanced ADCP-II mission computer and fly-by-wire flight controls.

Fourteen A-10 Thunderbolt IIs assigned to Osan Air Base, South Korea, arrived at yokotaairbase, Japan, in preparation for Red Flag Alaska 21-2. Red Flag Alaska is a U.S. Pacific Air Forces-sponsored exercise designed to provide realistic training in a simulated combat environment. This iteration of the exercise expects approximately 1,500 service members to fly, maintain and support more than 100 aircraft from more than 20 units.

The bealeafb U-2 Dragon Lady was a critical hub of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in the Northern Edge 21 Exercise in Alaska. This aircraft delivers critical imagery and signals intelligence to decision makers throughout all phases of conflict, and due to its ability to gather ISR information, the aircraft is routinely flown at altitudes over 70,000 feet. This requires the U-2 pilot to wear a full pressure suit similar to those worn by astronauts.
