The famous brand owes its birth to the Crimean War of 1853-1856. As the United Kingdom was drawn into this conflict, increased demand for weapons prompted the 14 largest gunsmiths from Birmingham to organize the Birmingham Small Arms Manufacturers Association in 1854. In 1861, this union turned into a joint-stock company - the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA), the emblem of which was three crossed rifles.

Entitled: St. John's College. U.S. General Hospital Div. No. 2. Annapolis, Md. Private Phillip Hattle, Co. I. 31st Pa. Vol's. admitted from the Flag of Truce Steamer June 6th 1865, died June 25th 1865, caused by ill treatment while a prisoner of war in the hands of the rebels. American Civil War Prison Camps were operated by both the Union and the Confederacy to handle the soldiers captured (1861-65). Out of some 3.8 million combatants over 409, 000 were taken prisoner. Approximately 56, 000 soldiers died in prisons during the war, accounting for almost 10% of all Civil War fatalities. The POWs died from wounds, from infectious diseases, or from illnesses related to substandard sanitary conditions, contaminated food and water, malnutrition, and from lack of proper clothing and shelter. Existing photographs of conditions in prison camps rival documentary evidence that would later emerge from the Holocaust
