🔝 G7 summit: Common goals, but different roads⠀
🌐 The summit opens today at Carbis Bay in Cornwall in the southwest of England. For the first time in two years, the leaders of the G7, including the "guests" invited by the British Prime Minister - Australia, India, and South Korea - will communicate in person.
⠀
For Joe Biden, this is the first global event as President of the United States, while the summit will be the last for Angela Merkel as Chancellor of Germany.
⠀
The main topic is the recovery of the global economy after the pandemic, the visa policy during the quarantine period, and the new format of Europe after Brexit, but the circle of the discussed issues is much wider.
⠀
So, on the eve of the summit, “WHO” chief, Dr. Ghebreyesus, called on influential countries to ensure universal global vaccination - a special commission will work on these issues.
⠀
A separate topic is the agreement on multinational corporations’ taxation, agreed by the finance ministers at the recent meeting in London. The proposed corporate tax at the level of 15% and the mechanism of its implementation does not suit most corporations and there is already latent pressure on politicians. So the level of discussion will be high.
⠀
The Johnson-Biden meeting is of particular interest as the relationship between the two leaders has always been difficult, so a quick trade deal with the United States is unlikely. However, the British prime minister has a chance to show miracles of diplomacy.
