💡 Corporate events: key dates
⠀
📅 We continue the topic: we remind you of what an investor must know to effectively control the market situation. So, we look at calendar and mark the milestones for ourselves.
⠀
Declared DateOfficial information about payments is published. Question of scheme and timing is decided at the General Meeting of Shareholders. Some companies pay dividends several times a year, for example, every quarter, and sometimes even when the results of operations are unprofitable. Interests of shareholders are more important than business!
⠀
Record dateThe closing date of register of shareholders is the last moment an investor can hold shares to receive dividends. Sometimes speculators are cunning and buy stocks just a few days before that date; the holding period of shares, in this case, does not matter and does not affect the amount of income. Payment of dividends after the record date occurs within a month.
⠀
Ex-Dividend DateThe first day a share is traded without dividends is determined by trading regime of exchange. But buying shares on the ex-dividend date does not entitle the investor to dividends. If you want to receive dividends, but do not intend to «hold» the company's shares for a long time, you can sell the shares at the current market price.
⠀
Payment DateDay on which the declared share dividend is to be paid to eligible investors. It is this date that implies the transfer of income to accounts of shareholders. The period is from 5 days to 1 month after the Ex-Dividend Date. Please note that the share price may decline on date of payment, even if the dividends have not yet been credited to bank accounts.
⠀
In the next post, we'll talk about structural transformations that can affect the price of a stock.
