The root cause of the degradation was too many web requests resulting in too many DNS queries, making the DNS server rate-limit our VPS hosting the public demo. As a result, most web requests timed out. Now it has been fixed. So here is a tip: if your self-hosted instance is suffering from the same issue, set up a local DNS server like dnsmasq.
