The Green Knight
The Green Knight is a mythical figure from Arthurian lore most well known from the English epic poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight". In the tale he is shown to be associated with Morgan la Fey but also unkillable, he is associated with the Yuletide, arriving at King Arthur's court on the feast of Epiphany (Jan 6th) where he challenges them to strike a blow on him. Gawain decides to accept the challenge and cut his head off, though the Green Knight picks his head up and challenges Gawain to complete his side of the bargain in one year. The Green Knight is said to reside in the "Green Chapel" and from there spread fertility to the land. He is reminiscent of the Green Man or "a" green man. The Green Knight in many ways is the pagan heart of the people, living on in the fields and in nature. At the end of the epic poem The Green Knight is shown to not truly be a villain and never intended to kill Gawain.-TLK
