The use of performance enhancing drugs has been growing in popularity. I believe that there are several negative affects of this trend and a ban on the sale of these drugs as well as raising public awareness can tackle the issue.
Side-effects of doping substances on a sportsman’s well-being as well as these drugs’ contribution in rendering sports competitions unfair are two major negatives of the practice. Starting with the former, it is no-brainer that most of these substances have crippling effects on athletes who consume them. Long term impact of these can include the risk of heart attack, increased blood pressure and impaired mental health : addiction to these drugs is highly likely to result in depression and suicidal thoughts, especially when withdrawn.
Another, albeit equally consequential aspect of utilizing boosters is that it may influence the results of tournaments; it is generally unjust for an athlete who has trained for years to lose to its counterpart who did not practice much, but made a use of performance-enhancing substances. On a regional level, it might not seem to be a significant matter, yet put on a global perspective, it can lead to major fall-outs among nations. For example, since grand sports events such as Olympic Games hold a worldwide significance, anything that might affect performance outcomes being unjust is critical.
