Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.
It has become common for young people to take a gap year after graduating from high school as a way of traveling and having a work experience in their intended major. In my opinion, the primary advantages of this trend are the opportunities to take a break from one’s studies and explore different fields; however, in doing so, they might fall behind and miss the chance to get an early start in their career/personal life.
Many students struggle to balance between pursuing their personal interests and managing their studies in high school. Taking a year off their studies gives them a chance to reconsider their career intentions or simply unwind to start the next year more productively and stress-free. As for the career advancement, many young people may not have decided which major they would be pursuing after high school, and they really need the time to explore various fields before settling on one. It is surely better than arbitrarily choosing a field without knowing the challenges they may face and regretting about their life choices later on.
As exciting as taking a gap year seems, students should also be ready for the costs of skipping an academic year as they can easily waste one year if careless. When people first step on the real life, they might find themselves alone, without any real obligations. This too much freedom may result in young people becoming too lazy and going in the wrong direction. Forgetting the real reason behind choosing to take a gap year, they may end up falling behind their peers who went straight into universities/colleges. The feeling of wasted year, moreover, might make them feel stressed.
In conclusion, although gap year may hold promises to better one’s life by giving them a chance to learn about their passions or travel to different countries to relax, one should not neglect the disadvantages as well: without enough motivation and discipline, they might waste whole year for no reason.
