FOCUS: Higher zinc premiums could spill over to Europe, USA; China ‘sucking up all the metal’
Zinc premiums across the globe could rise as producers ship metal to China to pro t on growing price spreads on the London Metal Exchange and the spot Shanghai market, according to analysts. The arbitrage window reopened in early August, which made it pro table to bring zinc into China. This spurred higher offers and bids, sending premiums in the top-consuming country to their highest for three and a half years last week. On August 25, importers stand to gain $106.84 by importing a tonne of zinc ingots into China, according to calculations by Metal Bulletin. The arbitrage once reached $122.12 last Friday. Market participants see the premium spike as a signal of solid demand from the country that imported three times more re ned zinc in July 2017 than a year ago. The gure shot up to 68,045 tonnes last month. “China’s demand for zinc has been rising as steel’s picking up. We don’t think the demand for imports will suddenly die down,” a Chinese trader said. In the rst six months of this year, China’s re ned zinc output had dropped slightly by 2% to 2,982,000 tonnes from a year ago. The country had used 3,240,000 tonnes of re ned zinc during the same period, accounting for almost half of the world’s consumption, according to the International Lead & Zinc Study Group (ILZSG). The production decline had been attributed to stricter environmental inspections and lower zinc concentrates supply, both domestically and globally. “The de cit in zinc concentrates is not going away. It’s structural. We saw big mines closing and there’s no replacement – unless the industry miraculously comes up with new mines to ll the gap,” Societe Generale analyst Robin Bhar told Metal Bulletin. That will likely push zinc buyers to look aggressively for sourcing materials into China through both domestic and overseas routes.
