Mid-Century, More Than

Здорово, когда произведения именитых мастеров обретают вторую жизнь в новую эпоху, но еще отраднее, когда это происходит с талантливыми работами неизвестных мастеров. Первые два снимка, иллюстрирующие эту заметку, разделяет 77 лет: черно-белая фотография была сделана в 1946 г. и случайно обнаружена в архивах датской компании «Fritz Hansen» в январе 2021 г. Запечатленная на ней детская лошадь-качалка, «продукт любви, изготовленный, вероятно, одним из фабричных столяров в свободное от работы время, а после подаренный домочадцу», не могла не заинтересовать дизайнеров компании и вдохновила команду во главе с Мадсом-Ульриком Хусумом на поиски следов этой лошадки.

Ни единственного экземпляра, ни информации о его авторе найти не удалось, но почти три года спустя появился целый табун лошадок: в 2023 г. «Fritz Hansen» воспроизвела игрушку по фотографии и запустила ее в массовое производство отчасти как дань фабричной истории, ведь тело качалки изготовлено из гнутой фанеры, «материала, с которым в той же самой мастерской экспериментировал Арне Якобсен прежде, чем создал свой легендарный штабелируемый стул, хвостом качалке служит кусок корабельной веревки, такой же, какую использовал Поул Кьерхольм при создании кресел PK25 и PK4, а уши сделаны из обрезков кожи, остающихся в цехах компании, - мера, позволяющая минимизировать отходы производства».

It is always endearing to see lost or forgotten works by prominent masters resurface as new re-editions, but it is even more so when it comes to exquisite designs by unknown artists. The first two photographs here were taken 77 years apart; the black-and-white one dates back to 1946 and was suddenly discovered on the premises of Fritz Hansen in January 2021. The rocking horse shown in this picture, which was likely created by a craftsperson at the workshop “as a personal project for a child or grandchild. A labour of love”, inspired a design team led by Mads-Ulrik Husum to embark on a quest to trace the origins of this piece.

Regrettably, Fritz Hansen failed to find the only copy of the rocker or attribute it to any of its former cabinetmakers. On the bright side, however, this find gave birth to a whole herd of rocking horses almost three years later; in 2023, Fritz Hansen recreated the rocker based on the existing photograph and put it into mass production, partially as a tribute to the history of the company’s craftsmanship since “the body of the horse is made from moulded veneer – the same material that Arne Jacobsen experimented with in the very same location to create his iconic stacking chairs. The Rocking Horse tail is made of halyard – the same material used in Poul Kjærholm’s PK25 and PK4 chairs. And the ears are made using leftover leather from Fritz Hansen’s production facilities as a way to ensure the absolute minimum of waste.”

В чем восточногерманский дизайн точно уступал западногерманскому – так это в тщательности документирования авторства изделий. В частности, скудные данные имеются о работах Клауса Куниса (1931-1996), начавшего свой трудовой путь литографом, в 1952 г. отправившегося изучать изящные искусства в Дрезден, а в 1960 г. закончившего берлинскую Академию художеств с проектом швейной машинки «Veritas 8017» в качестве дипломной работы. В том же году Кунис возглавил только что сформировавшийся отдел дизайна при комбинате «EBM», в 1964 г. отвечал за проектирование вокзальных камер хранения, удостоенных дизайнерской премии, в 1966 г. создал стиральную машину WM 66, распространившуюся миллионным тиражом по странам соцлагеря, а в 1971 г. – посудомоечную машину «AKA GA 4».

Однако самой известной работой Куниса была, конечно, пластиковая лейка, ставшая символом восточногерманского дизайна. Спроектированная в 1960 г., эта лейка долгое время производилась заводом «VEB Glasbijouterie Zittau», год за годом претерпевая изменения, продиктованные промышленными задачами и не улучшавшие ее эстетические качества (на последнем фото все известные модификации представлены в хронологическом порядке, справа налево).

What definitely set West Germany’s design industry apart from that of DDR was greater attention to the authorship of designs, something often neglected in East Germany. For example, very little information is available on the products by Klaus Kunis (1931-1996), an East German designer who started out as a lithographer, studied fine arts in Dresden starting from 1952, eventually graduating from Berlin Academy of Art in 1960 with the Veritas 8017 sewing machine as his graduation project and joining VVB BBM as the head of a newly-established design studio. In 1964, Kunis was responsible for designing luggage storage units for railway stations. In 1966, he designed the famous WM 66 washing machine, which was sold in millions both in DDR and elsewhere, and, in 1971, he produced the designs of the AKA GA 4 dishwasher.

However, Kunis’s best-known contribution to the household industry was this plastic watering can that has become synonymous with East German design. Created in 1960, this watering can was manufactured by VEB Glasbijouterie Zittau and enjoyed an extensive production run with multiple versions released over the years in response to multiple mass production variables. Sadly, as you will see from these pictures (especially the closing one, which shows all available versions chronologically, with the oldest ones on the right and the more recent ones on the left), the later the model, the simpler and less aesthetically pleasing it is…
