The F-4 Phantom II served as a key fighter jet for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) from the late 1960s until its retirement in 2020. Japan acquired 140 F-4EJs, with most produced domestically by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. These jets were used for air defense, reconnaissance (RF-4EJ), and maritime warfare roles.
Notable squadrons included 301 Hikotai, the first Phantom unit, and 501 Hikotai, known for reconnaissance missions. The last Phantom flight occurred in March 2021, marking the end of its 50-year service.
After March 2021, Japan transitioned from the retired F-4 Phantom II to modern F-35A Lightning II fighters as part of its military modernization. The JASDF has been integrating F-35As into its fleet, with deployments at Misawa Air Base and international collaborations, such as joint exercises with Australia and trilateral drills with the U.S. and South Korea.
