The participants (Igbal's friends and colleagues) gathered in front of the Palace of Europe, where the regular session of PACE is starting on the same day. One of the topics on this session's agenda is 'Deteriorating situation of human rights, rule of law and democracy in Azerbaijan'.

Yesterday, on September 23, 2024, the renowned human rights organization Amnesty International launched a campaign in defense of Igbal and other political prisoners in Azerbaijan. Anyone can take part in this campaign by sending an email to the President of Azerbaijan. We've prepared a template of such letter on our site. Alternatively you can take a template prepared by Amnesty.

After Saturday's court hearing, a few things have happened: one of Igbal's lawyers, Fariz Namazly, was detained by State Security officers and questioned for three hours this past Saturday, August 31, 2024. Another lawyer, Ganga Ibrahimov, announced that he is withdrawing from the case and has terminated the contract from today.

On July 22, 2024, Igbal Abilov, a researcher and humanities teacher who has lived most of his life in Belarus, was detained in Azerbaijan by officers of the State Security Service. He has been charged under three articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, and if found guilty by the court, he faces a long prison sentence. We (Igbal's family and friends) assert that these charges are completely unfounded and we will do our best to broadly cover this case in the media as well as draw the attention of international organizations to this unjust process.

22 июля 2024 года в Азербайджане сотрудниками Государственной службы безопасности был задержан Игбал Абилов, исследователь и преподаватель гуманитарных наук, большую часть жизнь проживающий в Беларуси. Ему предъявлены обвинения по трем статья УК Азербайджана и в случае признания вины судом грозит долгое тюремное заключение. Мы (семья и друзья Игбала) заявляем, что данные обвинения полностью безосновательны и будем всячески способствовать публичной огласке в СМИ и привлекать внимание международных организациях к данному несправедливому процессу.
