In the light of our soon-to-be-released translation episode, we would like to brief you on 3 key lexical-semantic substitutions🤍 that you should know to be able to conduct a good translation:
1️⃣Concretisation
А word/phrase with a broad meaning in SL (source language) is translated as a unit with a more restricted meaning in TL (target language):
At five o'clock an excellent meal was served in the dining room. ➡️ В пять часов в столовой был подан отличный обед.
2️⃣Generalisation(a.k.a. concretisation but vice versa)
A word/phrase with a narrow meaning in SL is transmitted with the choice of a broader concept:
Jane used to drive to market with her mother in their La Salle convertible.➡️ Джейн ездила со своей матерью на рынок в их машине.
3️⃣Modulation
A word/phrase in SL is substituted with a TL unit that has undergone semantic development in comparison to the original:
I don’t blame them. ➡️ Я их понимаю.(The cause becomes the consequence)
Keep these 3 techniques in mind and you’ll be able to create a more holistic, natural-looking, and coherent translation!✨
🤩 — if you already knew these methods but were happy to revise them!
We are pleased to share with you the first episode of this month, dedicated to pre-translation analysis, Diana Wynne Jones, and her novel Howl's Moving Castle👒
We apologize for the delay. It was caused by some unexpected technical issues (we were adjusting our vocal cords and articulatory apparatus to the cold November weather😍)
We hope you’ll enjoy the episode аnd it will warmyou a little in this chilly snowy-rainy weather 🫣
Our dear-dear bookworms, how have you been in these chilly November times? 📖
Today we’ve prepared for you a must-read list of books by our author of the month. As has been mentioned somewhere above, Diana Wynne Jones wrote over 40 novels and we, as her loyal admirers, would like to familarise our audience with those less famous than Howl’s Moving Castle🤩
These books are perrrrfect for the cold season, warming you with their plots and lines better than a steaming pot of herbal tea☕
Have a nice evening and don’t forget to read a page or two!📖
