Just a quick reminder that the Digital ID bill has already passed and will come into effect from 1 December.

The Government has not announced a timeline for the re-introduction of the ‘Combatting Misinformation & Disinformation Bill’ to parliament…

however I’m predicting that it won’t be introduced until sometime next year.

🚨𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 𝗔𝗚𝗢: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says that his legislation to ban teenagers from using social media in Australia will not allow VPN’s to bypass their age verification technology.

🚨𝗡𝗘𝗪: Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has backed Anthony Albanese’s plan to legislate age restrictions on all social media platforms — promising to achieve this within the first 100 days in office if elected as Prime Minister.

🚨𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 𝗔𝗚𝗢: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that his social media age restriction policy will be a national framework that will be enforced across Australia.

Anthony Norman Albanese has sadly woken up this morning at the age of 61.

Also to note — the ABC reported this morning that Peter Malinauskas would pass legislation in early 2025, but now that Albanese has said he will do it THIS YEAR, it looks like the nationwide ban will take precedent.

Correction — Albo now says “we’ll introduce legislation in this term of Parliament…”

Narrative was it would be done if re-elected not long ago.

They are moving fast on this now.

South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria have now publicly expressed interest in introducing social media bans on teenagers.

The Federal Labor Government will support a nationwide ban if re-elected in 2025.

Peter Dutton has said the eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant is one of the finest public servants in Australia.

NSW and SA will be hosting a Social Media Summit to address the harms of online platforms in October.

The final Parliamentary sitting week ends on 7 November, 2024.

The Joint Select Committee on Social Media has a final report due no later than 18 November.

Now we eagerly wait to see if the government has enough time to guillotine the ‘Combatting Misinformation & Disinformation Bill’ into law this year.

In an exclusive interview with CNET, Bill Gates has warned the world that the biggest problem facing society is now the spread of misinformation.

He says that all countries are struggling to find the boundary between protecting freedom of speech and limiting the spread of misinformation on social media, citing that the USA has the biggest difficulty in achieving this because of the First Amendment.

Bill Gates also believes that most internet users will want to be in an online environment where you can identify who you’re communicating because “𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲” — effectively abolishing the idea of anonymity.

🚨𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗢𝗪: the First People’s Assembly of Victoria has officially launched a series of community forum events throughout the state to convince the locals that Voice and Treaty ‘is the right thing to do’ for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people.

🚨𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: Victorian Premier, Jacinta Allan will soon announce draft legislation akin to the SA Governments proposed legislation to ban all teenagers under 14 from accessing all social media platforms.

This past Friday, National Cabinet convened to discuss several topics — with 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐬 being one of them.

Expect other state Premiers and Chief Ministers to declare legislative proposals to restrict access to social media throughout the next week.

🚨𝗡𝗘𝗪: Western Australian Premier, Roger Cook has today announced an initiative to encourage families to visit the Perth Zoo throughout Spring and the school holidays.

Family will be able to save up to $100, but the passes can only be claimed by registering to the governments Digital ID via the ServiceWA app.

The West Australian reports that over 44,000 families have already claimed tickets through the scheme.

The House and Senate reconvenes in Canberra tomorrow morning.

There are 6 sitting weeks left for the Government to pass legislation this year.

The ‘Combatting Misinformation & Disinformation Bill’ hasn’t been tabled yet.
