I need your help with this one…

Are Senate Committees allowed to make impromptu declarations that they will extend the final date for submissions?

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young did this today when CyberCX Executive Director said that he witnessed 𝕏Corp spreading propaganda on their platform.

DM me on IG/𝕏 if you know.

There is a video circulating where someone is saying that the ‘Combatting Misinformation & Disinformation bill’ will be passed in a week.

This is wrong.

The bill cannot be "passed next week" because it has just been referred to a Committee review, which won't issue its report until towards the end of November.

And this is not including the Committee review into Social Media, which is also due in November.

Debate cannot resume until after public consultation (submissions) and members proposals (committee review) have been formulated + a notice period of 7 days before debate resumes.

Finally — it cannot “pass next week” because the Senate doesn’t resume until 8 October.

The video should be deleted ASAP and a correction needs to be made.
Per the ‘Online Misinformation & Disinformation Reform, Impact analysis’ report, the take-home salary for full-time staff members who will monitor misinformation for ACMA is estimated to be $262,500 per year.

The cost to ‘gather information from digital platforms’ is estimated to be roughly $3 million per year — and ongoing operational costs for the agency are $16,275,000 per year.
