Mark Osterman:
My First Film Coating Machine: “Our Gang” Inspired
Made with a bicycle “take up“ wheel, two model T Ford connecting rods for the supply tension reel, a hot wax sprayer used in WW I to spray the hot emulsion onto the film and a foot operated air pump to supply pressure to the sprayer. It was powered by an electric motor from an old B&H projector with a speed control. I built this to help a film artist make cine film on recycled 16 mm film. The print shown here was made in contact with a negative for proof of photographic concept.
The hot emulsion spray technique worked well enough though the coating was grainy. The artist liked it like that so I didn’t do any more adjustments to make a finer spray or a post coating heater to make the gelatin smooth out, though that would have been my next step. We dismantled the machine a few days later.
