Decorum Editorial poetry translation competition

⭐️ The poem chosen is دیاری دیگر by Sohrab Sepehri. The three best translators will be chosen by the editorial board, with Professor M. R. G. Sabbagh as the head of the jury.

♦️The texts received will be evaluated in terms of fidelity, as well as aestheticism.

💎The first translation will be awarded The Mansion & Light in August by William Faulkner and will be published in Decorum's upcoming issue.

➕The second best translation prize is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

➕The third translation prize is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams

⛔️The texts received after the deadline (Farvardin 30th) are not eligible for the award.

In the upcoming issue of Decorum, we are going to explore the concepts of "Immigration, Diaspora, and Refugee Identity". The following is a list of our suggested topics for the different sections of the journal.


📝Literature:

1. Representation of immigration in Persian contemporary literature

2. A review of the Literature of Displacement

3. The effects of belief and faith on  immigration

4. Nation as the object of desire in literature

5. Instances of migrant literature

6. The dispute of the English and the Irish, and the clash of identity

7. What's with the obsession of English/American expatriates with Paris in 20th century?

8. Some suggested works: Mansoor Zabetian's travelogues, Behrooz Boochani's No Friend but the Mountain, پاییز فصل آخر سال است - نسیم مرعشی, George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London

📝 Art & Culture:

1. Identity and belonging regarding immigrants: Mohsin Hamid

2. Different nuances of refugees and immigrates represented in World's photography

3. The Cultural heritage of the composers who immigrated to another country

4. The relationship with the homeland: Focusing on themes of Nostalgia, memory and longing for return

5. Delving into people's inability to maintain their culture and identity living in the host country: cultural shock

6. The quest for identity: exploring themes of uprooting, rerouting and multi-culturalism

7. The effects of immigration on personal relationships

8. The dilemma of personal development Vs. fleeing away

9. Film reviews: Gangs of New York, Saru, Moscow on the Hudson.

You can choose any other topic related to "Immigration, Diaspora, and Refugee Identity" if you wish. Please contact @sadeqmld if you would like to make a contribution. The deadline for submission is the 30th of Farvardin.

1. Platonic love in literature: Nonsexual bond and affection between two people of the opposite gender

2. Love and faith, Love of God: John Donne's Holy Sonnets, Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante's Divine Comedy

3. The concept of pipe dreams and its traces in 20th century literature (theatre): Its pioneers, definitions, themes

4. The reversal of gender roles: Emasculating females and toxic masculinity in literature

5. Fairy tales and the concept of happily ever after in Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Lord of the Rings etc.

6. Lust and Desire as opposed to ethereal love: Anna Karenina, Unbearable Lightness of Being, Lolita

7. Bromance/womance: Instances of nonsexual relationship and affection between people of the same sex: Harold Pinter's Betrayal, Oscar Wilde's Lord Henry, Frodo and Sam in LOTR, Harry and Ron in Harry Potter

8. Portrayals of Femme Fatale/Don Juan characters in literature.

9. Oedipus/Electra complex: Instances of love between children and their parents in literature

💠 Art & Culture:

1. Patriotism: Love for one's nation/hometown/culture/language: Cause and Effect essay vs. The globalist POV of the 21st century human: immigration, isolation, homelessness and lack of belonging

2. The portrayal of the 21st century family: People's struggle to adjust to multifaceted, fastpaced new forms of life in the contemporary world

3. The effect and role of technology in the new generation's viewpoint towards love

4. The globalist (western) vs. local representations and expressions of love

5. Movie review: Malena - Before trilogy - Casablanca - Titanic - The Heiress - Disney's fairy tales

7. Romance in paintings: Caspar David Friedrich - Gustav Klimt - J. M. W. Turner - Francisco Goya - Jacques-Louis David
