‘The State of Jefferson’ The state of Jefferson movement was started in the 1850s. Over the years, it has grown in proposed size and the seriousness of the movement has varied, but the idea has always remained the same; The lack of representation from the governments in Sacramento and Salem requires the formation of a new state encompassing Northern California and Southern Oregon. Sometimes referred to as the “Great Red North” because of its consistent right-wing voting record, the inhabitants of Northern California specifically are known for their natural ruggedness and nationalistic attitude. Following the Sierras and Gold Country south, one can find Jefferson state flags and bumper stickers as far as Calaveras and Tuolumne county. While the formation of Jefferson would be beneficial for the population of the region, the declaration of support, and the movement itself, symbolizes the liberty-oriented rebelliousness that has been a staple of the American spirit since before the country’s birth.
