These two verbs could be easily confused since they're one of the most difficult irregular verbs. You need to understand their meaning before learning how to use them.

π¬ Definition of LAY
Lay means to put something or someone down. Remember, PUT STH DOWN. Hence, 'lay' is a transitive verb, which means a direct object will follow it.

β I laid my books on the table.
β½οΈ I put my books on the table.
β Don't lay the shirt on the bed.
β½οΈ Don't put the shirt on the bed.

π¬ Definition of LIE
Lie means to rest or recline, so hence, this verb is intransitive, which means no direct object will be following it.

β I lie on the bed.
β½οΈ I rest on the bed.
β Her cat lies on the floor.
