BEN HARNWELL: At the Mar-a-Lago press conference, President Trump, under questioning, refused to rule out using the US military to wrest control of the Panama Canal and/or Greenland. I imagine three people watching very attentively indeed were Presidents Xi, Putin and Zelensky. Xi, because he may quote President Trump as justification should he launch his own invasion of Taiwan. Putin, because he will feel more secure at eventual peace talks. But most of all Zelensky, because there is now a clear inference that the US will no longer see Putin’s chosen defence of Russian national interest as wholly illegitimate.
