Inspiration or Plagiarism? Case of an AI Artist Accused of BorrowingWhat Happened?Artist
Petra Voice released a series of collectibles titled "Babes" on
the Foundation marketplace, causing an outrage in the art community. She's been accused of using other artists' works in AI tools.
InvestigationIn late May, a user on platform X posted
a disappointing thread claiming that Petra Voice's artworks were the result of blending other authors' works. He conducted his own investigation, meticulously examining the artist's projects, even comparing the curls of hair on characters. Ultimately, he called Petra's creations a deception and a simulation of art.
Plagiarism or Inspiration? Some supported the investigator and even found
prototypes of the babes created in acrylic by another artist. Others
pointed out that by this logic, digital creators would have to abandon all technologies, including Photoshop and other editors. While AI is rapidly developing, it still cannot replace an artist and realize their vision. The artist is the one who determines propmt and the final of the art object.
What Does the Artist Say?At the same time, Petra
asserts that she uses AI in her art. She said this is stated in her statement, and it's obvious that various tools are used in digital media art.
Marketplace ReactionThe Foundation went further: amid the discussion, they
dropped her new "Babes" series and supported
several statements that broadly raised the issue of AI philosophy.
"Whether we like it or not, we live in the era of neural networks, and they are changing how artists create and share their art with the world." (Aimagine)
ConclusionDid this conflict make Petra's art less valuable? No. This case increased her
popularity, and she continues to release projects and collabs. In new media art, technology acts as a co-author with the artist: using different tools is part of the artistic method of digital creators.
Do new technologies change our understanding of art? What do you think?
