Mother & Child Freeze Frame, 2003 \\ Mary A. Kelly
As an artist I position myself between mother and child trying to capture the emotional flow between both. I can’t do that because I stand in the way. So I turn them towards the viewer (camera, audience) and compose the shot so that they seem to be responding to each other. This creates the discourse. This discourse is part of our everyday viewing of television and cinematic images. Crossing the line, seamless editing and continuity ensure that we read this imagery effortlessly without becoming self-conscious about the underlying grammar. This intervention ensures that the images appear more “true”. My truth, the mother’s truth, the viewer’s truth… whose truth?
In this M.A. project I wanted to explore the tenacious nature of the mother/child relationship. Mother and child face each other on two separate monitors as a formal consideration.
