Similar to the discussion we had about music in the first session, here we will delve into the realm of cognitive linguistics, but this time with a specific focus on music. We'll begin by visiting the essential building blocks of cognitive linguistics. A significant number of musicologists propose the intriguing idea that music functions as a language, albeit one that doesn't convey highly abstract information. We'll spend considerable time dissecting this claim and exploring the evidence for and against this viewpoint. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that music does share some characteristics with language, then it becomes a logical next step to map the findings and theories of cognitive linguistics onto the domain of music cognition. This approach could offer valuable insights into how we understand and interpret music on a deeper level. By drawing parallels between how we process language and how we process music, we can potentially unlock new avenues for understanding the fascinating relationship between these two fundamental human faculties.
