“Anomalous” volcanic activity detected on Mt Teide
The Scientific Committee for the Evaluation and Monitoring of Volcanic Phenomena (CCES) in the Canary Islands has ruled out an increased likelihood of an eruption on Tenerife in the short to medium term. However, data since 2016 indicates rising seismic activity, changes in gas emissions from Teide, and potential pressure increases in the hydrothermal system, warranting enhanced monitoring.
Notable seismic swarms were recorded in 2023 beneath Las Cañadas and Santiago del Teide. Experts emphasized improved detection systems and ongoing collaboration with regional authorities to ensure preparedness while reassuring the public about the current low eruption risk.
