The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, formed by the drift of the African and Asian tectonic plates, is a geological depression located at the junction of three tectonic plates.
Spanning Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, it sits over 100 meters below sea level and features some of Earth's most extra terrestrial landscapes, including salt lakes, lava lakes, and colourful acidic springs.
Known as the hottest place on Earth, it has significant scientific interest. The discovery of "Lucy," a 3.2 million-year-old early human ancestor, and the study of extremophile microbes in the Dallol Crater contribute to understanding life's origins on Earth and potential life on Mars.
