In definitiva la Commissione di Indagine determina quale causa diretta della rottura della fune traente superiore, del tronco funiviario Alpino-Mottarone in corrispondenza del tratto di fune dell’attacco alla testa fusa del veicolo 3, il danneggiamento della fune in quel tratto per pregressi fenomeni di fatica per trazione/torsione e fatica/corrosione (non adeguatamente monitorati) che hanno interessato circa 2/3 in termini di area resistente dei fili componenti, provocati da vibrazioni traversali dell’oscillazione della fune associati a possibili effetti dinamici e torsionali provocati dall’allungamento della fune traente e dal non corretto scorrimento del contrappeso.
La fune traente superiore si rompeva in prossimità del corrispondente attacco a testa fusa della cabina 3 senza determinare l'intervento automatico del freno di emergenza sulla portante in quanto entrambe le morse a comando idraulico erano state rese inattive con blocchi metallici.
