PhD application in short I am not a specialist here, I am just a master student that wanna get PhD in
✨nice lab
✨There are different ways and rules to apply for PhD position. It vary a lot between fields but we are researchers andб what's more, we're neuroscientists, so
1. Applying Directly to LabsThis is the easiest way to apply a PhD position. All you need to do is to read the lab's description and their most recent and valuable publications. Then, you email the supervisor directly and send him your CV, sometimes even without formal motivation letter, as I usually put all necessary details in the email itself.
While this method is straightforward and quick, it has lower probability that you will be accepted. Supervisors are not always actively looking for PhD students and even if they are, your success depends on a bit of luck. The lab must need a PhD student at that particular moment, your profile should align with their requirements and, most importantly, they must have funding available for PhD student.
There’s a chance that even after successfully passing multiple interviews and receiving verbal acceptance from a lab, the supervisor might tell you that securing funding or a fellowship is your responsibility, and that without it, they may not be able to officially take you on.
2. Applying through Doctoral Programs. Doctoral programs are specifically designed to recruit and support PhD students, often providing funding directly to the lab. This method ensures that supervisors are actively looking for candidates, which increases your chances of being accepted.
Each program has its own requirements, and the list of documents needed can vary aaa looot. From CVs and recommendation letters to research proposals (I am doing one right now! I am not kidding). Deadlines can be tight and crazy, so managing everything on time can feel overwhelming. Still, I believe that the more you invest, the more you can get.
"Try, always try.
If you don't try to do, then you won't even have the small chance that those who try have." @
