I don’t know if I believe Carter over Bell here.

But the larger point is that the President fully possesses this power. The reason Carter might have felt sheepish about admitting what he did to Mitchell is that it undermines the post-Watergate myth that DOJ is independent of the President. (BOP is part of DOJ.)

In other words, when push came to shove, Carter may not even have believed his own DOJ independence myth when the rubber met the road.

In JournoLawfare™️ zealot Harry Litman’s latest podcast, the Attorney General of Colorado Phil Weiser came on as a guest.

Showing how out of touch these people are and focused on minutiae and microaggression grievance mongering, before he used the phrase “We are a government of laws, not men,” Weiser apologized for “the gendered language.”

This small episode also shows that these folks have no ear for the English language. Saying, for instance, “We are a government of laws, not people,” robs the statement of all of its rhetorical force and renders it blasé.
